THE COMMUNITY OF GODS RIVER

Gods River is a remote, isolated settlement in Northern Manitoba, Canada and the primary settlement of the Manto Sipi Cree Nation also known as God’s River . The settlement is on Gods Lake at the point of outflow of the Gods River. The population is approximately 800 people. The official languages of the community are English and Cree.

The community can only be reached by winter road, via Gods Lake Airport or by Perimeter flights. The residents of God’s River play a very important part in the success of your fishing trip. They own and operate the Lodge. They completely staff the Lodge including the guides. The guides, have since childhood, learned to navigate the Lake and River. Know the fishing spots and are ready and eager to display their skills in ensuring that your trip will be one to be remembered.

GODS RIVER LODGE - A SHORT HISTORY

In the old days on Gods Lake high winds would come up and create very big waves and result in dangerous canoeing experiences, so it was named Devil's Lake. Soon after the missionaries arrived in the area they said that a place this beautiful cannot be named after the devil so renamed it appropriately Gods Lake.

In 1946, a Northern Trapper by the name of Tom Raminski canoed Gods Lake with his brother and several Cree Guides. The Ruminski brothers wanted to find an ideal location for a Fishing Lodge that would service wealthy American Fishermen. When their Cree guides showed the Ruminski brothers Gods River right at the mouth of the Lake they immediately chose this site as an ideal location and immediately built four cabins for the winter. A runway was constructed using manual labor and the Lodge opened within a year. Immediately after the Lodge opened, a settlement was formed adjacent to the Lodge to provide support staff and workers for the Lodge. Their level of success surpassed their wildest dreams. When the Raminskis retired from the operation, the Lodge was taken over by the community of Gods River and they currently own and operate the Lodge completely with members of the Community.
